Here’s another in my ongoing series of photographing eights.  This one was on the back of an old circus train in the Ringing Museum in Sarasato, Florida.  Not a recommended place to go if you are afraid of clowns.  Pretty cool place for everyone else.

Cover Art by Dirk Hayes Cover Art by Dirk Hayes

Just stumpled upon an online gallery in the Atlanta Creative Loafing; the first 22 images of which are mine.  It goes along with the full article by David Lee Simmons about the Atlanta lowbrow scene (i.e. burlesque, drive-ins, hot rods, horror movies, punk & rockabilly, roller girls, etc.).  I’ve photographed or been personally involved in almost every topic he covered, including Blast-Off Burlesque, the Silver Scream Spook Show and The Gallery at East Atlanta Tattoo.  It’s great to see the spotlight shed on some of the unique-to-Atlanta subculture.  Most of which has been flying under the Loaf’s radar for quite some time.

Thanks David.  Keep up the good work.

human chain operation gelato

Last weekend I participated in an Urban Prankster event.  It’s a network of people who participate in pranks, hacks, participatory art, flash mobs, and other creative endeavors that take place in public places in cities across the world.  It’s generally good natured in spirit and meant to make the unsuspecting public who encounters it do a double take.

The concept of this particular event was to create a frozen human chain. One person freezes in place, the next person walks up a little later, touches them and freezes, etc etc.  Once the chain is complete, one by one they unfreeze and go about their business.  The kid in the middle of the photo seemed especially confounded.

The event took place by the fountains in Centennial Olympic Park.  The same thing was attempted in the CNN food court, but was quickly broken up by security guards.  Guess they don’t appreciate performance art.

These 3 Children Were Never Seen Again

Great news!  I just received notification that I won a Create Award for Best of Catergory: Photography Support / Retouching.  Can I get a whoot whoot.

My work will be featured in the Create Awards 2008 Winners Book and online showcase, as well as at the gallery/reception at Create Chaos in Orlando, FL.

The Whole Piece

The Whole Piece

This shot was created for my client Zenith Design Group as part of a larger composite piece for the cover of a kid’s activity kit.  Most of the photography is mine, except for the lizard, leaves and jungle shots.

Muchos gracias to Angela Bowden and Kristi Wood for their great art direction.

Go team!

waffle house of horrors

the victims were found diced, smothered & covered

Last week was the grand opening of the Waffle House Museum, located just around the corner from the studio.  Waffle House is one of my favorite restaurants of the variety that are open 24 hours a day, 395 days a year.  The museum is located in the building that was the very first Waffle House restaurant.  It has been meticulously restored to how it looked when it originally opened in 1955.

Apparently back in the 50’s, dripping bloody fonts made people hungry for hashbrowns.

Nymphaea

Water Lilly & Bug

I took this shot while location scouting at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.  The plant is a Tropical Water Lilly, or Nymphaea Billabong if you want to get technical.

I’m not sure what the bug is.

He wasn’t labeled.

tanglewood chicken salad

This is the Tanglewood Chicken Salad from Trois.  This shot was taken outside with sunlight filtered through a patio umbrella and fill flash from the side.  It was exposed at 1/100th of a second at f9 on ISO 100.  It was a very windy day.

There is really nothing else I can tell you about this photograph.

I didn’t get to eat this one.

faster sideburns

faster sideburns

Today marked the beginning of the 2nd Annual Faster Mustache 24-hour bike race around Atlanta.  The race has no specific route, only a series of 6 checkpoints that the riders have to hit in order.  The one who hits the most checkpoints in 24 hours wins!  Anyone who can do anything for 24 hours straight is a winner in my book.

The race festivities included a show at the Elliot Street Pub checkpoint by the one and only Blast-Off Burlesque.  Although, the riders were so focused and determined that they didn’t even stop to see it.  That’s dedication.  Us lazy bystanders had a good time though.

Here’s a shot of the indefinable Dickie Van Dyke riding on a byke.

smoking shoes

smoking shoes

I actually shot this on film about 5 years ago, and just now got around to scanning it (stupid digital cameras and their instant gratification).  Anyway, it has been on the back burner for a long time, so I decided to dust off the old film scanner and give it a go.  I think I was going for a human spontaneous combustion thing.  There were some shots where I set the timer and ran (barefoot) to lie in the background as if I had been blown clear out of my shoes.  Those were stupid.  This one is better.  I like how the smoke coming out of the shoes mimics the clouds above.

Fun fact: I used tiny baby combat boots to make the smoke seem bigger and perspective more exaggerated.

..but I make exceptions for friends.  It’s not that I don’t like weddings. No, actually it is that I don’t like weddings.  But Hallie and Rob’s wedding was a great time and it seemed that they, and everyone else in attendance, had a lot of fun.  If all weddings were like this, I might consider getting in the business.

Congratulations you guys.
