Just stumpled upon an online gallery in the Atlanta Creative Loafing; the first 22 images of which are mine.  It goes along with the full article by David Lee Simmons about the Atlanta lowbrow scene (i.e. burlesque, drive-ins, hot rods, horror movies, punk & rockabilly, roller girls, etc.).  I’ve photographed or been personally involved in almost every topic he covered, including Blast-Off Burlesque, the Silver Scream Spook Show and The Gallery at East Atlanta Tattoo.  It’s great to see the spotlight shed on some of the unique-to-Atlanta subculture.  Most of which has been flying under the Loaf’s radar for quite some time.

Thanks David.  Keep up the good work.

Today marked the beginning of the 2nd Annual Faster Mustache 24-hour bike race around Atlanta.  The race has no specific route, only a series of 6 checkpoints that the riders have to hit in order.  The one who hits the most checkpoints in 24 hours wins!  Anyone who can do anything for 24 hours straight is a winner in my book.

The race festivities included a show at the Elliot Street Pub checkpoint by the one and only Blast-Off Burlesque.  Although, the riders were so focused and determined that they didn’t even stop to see it.  That’s dedication.  Us lazy bystanders had a good time though.

Here’s a shot of the indefinable Dickie Van Dyke riding on a byke.

The Gypsy & The Bearded Lady

It’s not easy to explain the bizarreness that is the Silver Scream Spook Show.  Imagine if Ed Wood and Tim Burton collaborated on a no budget live production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and you’re on the right track.  The Spook Show involves an ever-growing cast of strange characters, dance numbers, magic tricks and audience participation.  Following the live show is a classic horror or sci-fi movie on the big screen; always great prints and sometimes the only ones in existence.  The Silver Scream Spook Show is the last Saturday of every month at the Plaza Theater, Atlanta’s oldest continually running and only independent movie theater.
